Turning an Old Classic Toy Into Global Change
I love balloons. There’s so many things you can do with them. Blow them up, make animals out of them, fill them with water and throw them at small kids, but I bet you’ve never thought that balloons would get a chance to change the world.
That’s just what Google is planning to do with their new Loon Project. They plan to launch specialized balloons into the stratosphere (25 km above the earth) carrying special antennas that can transmit Internet to an area up to 40 km around the balloon. They hope that this technology will one day be able to give Internet access to places where there currently is none.
For now they plan on starting small, just testing the balloons in a small area of southern New Zealand, but if all works well, the future of the Internet is looking up.
